THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE MOTION PICTURE TRILOGY SPECIAL EXTENDED 12-DISC SET

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

As the glorious beginning of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves viewers craving more. Due to its expansive nature, Peter Jackson's ambitious film condenses J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless story, yet this powerful adaptation honors Tolkien's vision, securing its place as one of the finest fantasy movies ever created. With a runtime of 178 minutes, it offers ample time to introduce the diverse inhabitants of Middle-earth, the fabled Rings of Power, and the alliance of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans, all guided by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the courageous hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood). Together, they face daunting evil forces on their perilous quest to obliterate the One Ring in the land of Mordor.

Skillfully paced, the film is both grand and personal, showcasing breathtaking special effects and intricate set designs while highlighting the emotional depth of Frodo's journey. Concluding on a note rich with heroic allegiance and eager anticipation, this enchanting fantasy continues in The Two Towers (2002).

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is an uninterrupted follow-up to Peter Jackson's grand fantasy adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary works. Following the fracture of the Fellowship, Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) and Sam (portrayed by Sean Astin) set off towards Mordor to eliminate the One Ring of Power, assisted by the creature Gollum as their guide.

In the meantime, Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (portrayed by Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (depicted by John Rhys-Davies) engage in defending the people of Rohan. They face off against the initial onslaught in the extermination plan of the Men race orchestrated by the rogue wizard Saruman (played by Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron.

With breathtaking creatures, remarkable visual effects, and a climactic showdown at Helm's Deep fortress, The Two Towers serves as a fitting sequel to The Fellowship of the Ring. It is larger in scope yet maintains the emotional closeness of the story. These two films might represent some of the finest fantasy cinema ever produced, but they merely set the stage for the monumental events to come in The Return of the King.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King:

With The Return of the King, the most significant fantasy saga in cinematic history reaches its magnificent finale. Director Peter Jackson's breathtaking interpretation of Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings may never completely appease die-hard fans of Tolkien's vast works, but it stands unparalleled in its physical and technical artistry, marked by immense scale and ambition. It achieves cinematic milestones one after another, as the courageous yet endearingly naive Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) perseveres in his quest to Mordor, where his fate is to eliminate the soul-dominating One Ring of Power in the fiery heart of Mount Doom. Meanwhile, the heir to the human throne, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), faces the colossal conflict at Minas Tirith alongside allies such as the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), and the powerful wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Frodo and his loyal friend Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) must navigate the treacherous manipulations of Gollum, who is a convincing blend of live performance (by Andy Serkis) and intricately crafted computer animation.

Jackson, along with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, has a significant amount of narrative to tackle; their ability to do so with rapid pacing and grand scope is remarkable. By adding deeper significance to the actions of fellow Hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that Return of the King retains the trilogy's focus on close-knit camaraderie. Although several key characters make only fleeting appearances, and one (the evil wizard Saruman, played by Christopher Lee) appears exclusively in the DVD's extended version, Jackson deserves recognition for his editorial skill; much like the archer Legolas, his precision as a filmmaker is unwavering, and he remains true to Tolkien's overall vision. If some critics argue that Return has too many conclusions, it is simply because the epic's ending is so generously inclusive of the cast members—most prominently Astin—who contributed to its initial strength.

By concluding the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and a belief in the magic of storytelling, The Return of the King, similar to its predecessors, will endure as a timeless adventure.

Also on Disc:

The extended versions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings showcase the most remarkable trilogy in cinematic history through the most ambitious DVD collections ever created. In adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly impossible-to-adapt narrative for the big screen, Jackson was aided by remarkable visual effects, stunning locations in New Zealand, and a meticulously selected cast. Most importantly, his collaboration with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens preserved the essence of Tolkien's vision and often his exact words, while also making necessary adjustments for the film medium. Although purists voiced their discontent regarding these alterations, along with omitted characters and scenes, the nearly two additional hours of content found in the extended editions (totaling around 11 hours) address these concerns by exploring deeper aspects of Tolkien's music, character development, and unresolved threads that enhance the storyline, including an exploration of the relationship between Faramir and Denethor, as well as the arrival of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. Moreover, the extended versions provide more connective material between the films, reinforcing the concept that the trilogy is essentially one extended film presented in three parts (which is why it is often hailed as the greatest trilogy—there are no weak links). The addition of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship in the first film significantly impacts the overall narrative, while the new Faramir scene at the conclusion of the second film serves to set the stage for the third installment, and a new Saruman segment at the beginning of the third film effectively ties up the plot threads from the second.

As a final highlight, the extended versions include four discs for each film: two discs dedicated to the longer movie, accompanied by four commentary tracks and impressive DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two additional discs for bonus content, which encompass almost every aspect from script development to visual effects. The contention was that fans would require both versions due to the distinct nature of the bonus content, but the features in the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the sole reason a fan might want them would be to view the shorter theatrical cuts (the last of which, The Return of the King, notably won 11 Oscars). Without exception, the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings have set the gold standard for DVDs by offering an enriched viewing experience that unites the three films and further immerses viewers in Tolkien's universe, delivering a reference-quality home theater experience alongside abundant, thoughtful, and captivating bonus features.

IMAGES:

All images/pictures are stock photos and are for reference only, mainly to show the type of game you will be getting. Please read "WHAT YOU GET" for what is included with the media. Screenshots may vary based on your own computer system, video card, monitor, etc.

COMPATIBILITY:

Computers are like people, each one is different. Unlike console games, a computer game may install and work flawlessly on one system but may need adjustments on another. This is due to a variety of factors, mainly the OS platform running, video card you have, drivers, protection software installed, etc. Many times manufacturers release updates to games to fix bugs and add enhancements. We would be happy to help get the game going on your computer, but ultimately compatibility issues are the responsibility of the buyer. We suggest going to Google and searching for the name of the game along with the words "system requirements" to determine if your system is suitable. Ultimately, we are not responsible for software compatibility problems or publisher's errors.

PLATFORM:

Stated within the auction is what platform the game will work on (ie. Windows, Mac, Linux...) This is a generic statement and specific platform versions (ie. XP, Vista...) will have to be researched by the buyer. Games that came out PRIOR to XP or higher will not specifically state they will work on that release, but only because they came out before those versions were made. Many, if not most, will work on XP or higher with a few quick adjustments. We provide instructions with all items purchased on how to do this adjustment using the Program Compatibility Wizard. If we find out that an item will definately not work on a specific version, we will state it. For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program if the Program Compatibility Wizard does not work.

64-Bit Windows OS Systems:
For 64-bit Operating Systems, older games most likely will NOT work due to 64-bit systems not being able to run 16-bit programming code (most games prior to 2000). For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program.

Macintosh Systems:
For Macintosh programs, most older games will need to be run in Classic Environment if you have a MAC OS X 10.0 - 10.4 version. Please research Google on how to do this, or send us a message for information prior to purchasing. If your MAC OS system doesn't support Classic Environment (ie. MAC OS X 10.5 or Higher OR Intel Macs), you will have to try running it using the free program called SheepShaver, but compatibility is not ensured. Please research prior to purchasing or ask questions.

MEDIA FORMAT:

Please verify you have the required hardware in order to use the specified media (ie. CD, DVD, floppy drives, etc.) If the item comes as a floppy disc, make sure you have either the needed 3.5" floppy drive or the bigger and older 5.25" floppy drive.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SMOOTH PURCHASE:

  • Ask questions PRIOR to purchasing an order to avoid any confusion.
  • Be patient if there are problems during installation or gameplay. Typically someone else has already ran into that problem and has listed a solution online. Contact us and we will do our best to help.
  • Be sure to update your video card drivers and search for updates to the game from the manufacturer.
